Characteristics and Safety Performance of silica gel Gel

Features:

Silica gel is a highly active adsorbent material, typically produced by reacting sodium silicate with sulfuric acid and subjecting it to a series of post‑treatment steps, including aging and acid leaching. As an amorphous substance, its chemical formula is SiO2·nH2O. It is insoluble in water and all solvents, non‑toxic and odorless, and chemically stable; except for strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid, it does not react with any other substances. Different grades of silica gel exhibit distinct microporous structures due to variations in their manufacturing processes. Its unique chemical composition and physical structure endow it with several properties that are difficult to replicate with other similar materials, such as superior adsorption capacity, excellent thermal stability, chemical inertness, and high mechanical strength.

Silica gel is classified according to pore size into macroporous silica gel, mesoporous silica gel, Type B silica gel, and microporous silica gel. Due to differences in their pore structures, each type exhibits distinct adsorption characteristics. Mesoporous silica gel demonstrates higher adsorption capacity under conditions of high relative humidity, whereas microporous silica gel shows greater adsorption than mesoporous silica gel at lower relative humidities. Type B silica gel, with a pore structure intermediate between meso- and microporous types, displays an adsorption performance that falls between the two. Macroporous silica gel is typically used as a catalyst support, an opacifying agent, or an abrasive in toothpaste, among other applications. Therefore, the appropriate grade should be selected based on the specific application.

Safety Performance:

Silica gel is primarily composed of silicon dioxide, exhibits chemically stable properties, and is non‑combustible. As an amorphous form of silicon dioxide, it requires that workplace dust concentrations be maintained at or below 10 mg/m³; adequate ventilation must be ensured, and respiratory protection should be worn during handling.
Silica gel has strong adsorption properties and can dry out human skin; therefore, appropriate protective clothing should be worn during handling. If silica gel gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with copious amounts of water and seek medical attention promptly.
Blue silica gel contains a small amount of toxic cobalt chloride; therefore, it should be kept away from food and avoid ingestion. In the event of poisoning, seek medical attention immediately.

Type A silica gel, also known as fine-pore silica gel, appears as transparent or translucent granules. It is available in two forms: spherical and blocky. Its main constituent is SiO2•nH2O; it is insoluble in water and inorganic acids, but soluble in hydrofluoric acid and concentrated caustic soda solutions. It exhibits high mechanical strength and excellent abrasion resistance. Its internal structure features a pore volume of 0.35–0.5 mL/g, a pore diameter of 20–40 Å, and a specific surface area of ≥600 m²/g.
